How to Set-up A Vendor To Sell Your Items in Second Life

How to Set-up a Vendor to Sell Your Creations in Second Life

Have you made something new and rad in Second Life?  And are you ready to sell it?  Wonderful!  That’s one of the fun things about Second Life.  You can create new things – and pass them to  others who can use them.  If you’re ready to become a Second Life entrepreneur, this information will be helpful.  It will show how you can sell your cool, new creations!

I’ve tried to make things easy.  When I first started I was pretty confused about how everything worked.   So what I have done is to have prepared a free kit to go along with this information.   In the kit, you’ll find vendor posters  and everything you’ll need to get started.

You can obtain the kit free at my store.  Before getting too deep into the instructions, you might want to pick up the kit right now, and it will be easier to follow along.

I only ask for one small favor.  While you are at my store, I would be grateful if you added the store to your “Picks.”  (If you’ve never added a store to your picks, here how to do it in two illustrations:  Adding a Pick ).

To obtain the kit go to my store in Second Life.  Here’s what you are looking for:

Go ahead and open the kit and save it to your inventory.

When you open the kit, you’ll find two sample vendor posters:  Vendor Poster I  and Vendor Poster II.

VENDOR POSTER I is simple.  You set a price and place the items that you are selling in the contents of the vendor poster, and you’re ready to go.

VENDOR POSTER II provides your customer with information about the product.  They do that by left clicking on the poster.  If they decide to buy, they right click and select “Pay.”  It also provides you with sales information: the number of items sold and the total amount.

The instructions are different depending on which vendor poster you are using.

The following are directions for VENDOR POSTER #1

1. PREPARE AN IMAGE OF THE PRODUCT.  Use a graphic program and prepare an image of the item that you want to sell.  Upload the image to Second Life by selecting Build >> Upload Image from the Menu on top of the screen. (In the older Viewer, uploading was found under the File Menu).

2. REZ THE SAMPLE VENDOR POSTER.  Look in your inventory for the ” Chimera’s Vendor Kit – Vendor Poster to Sell Your Own Items” and you’ll find the two Sample Vendor Posters.  Select Vendor Poster I (see above for an explanation of the differences poster I and II).  Go to a sandbox or someplace where you can “rez” objects.  (Rez means dragging them out of your inventory to land).  So do that now.  Rez the Sample Vendor Poster on the ground so you can see it.

3. ADD YOUR PRODUCT’S IMAGE TO THE SAMPLE VENDOR POSTER. Add the image of the item that you are selling to Sample Vendor Poster.  Haven’t done that before?  To add an image, right click on the Sample Vendor Poster and select “Edit.”  Then from the dialog box that appears, click on the “Texture” tab.  The click in the “Texture” window and from the list appears select the image file that you created with your item.

4. DRAG YOUR ITEMS FROM INVENTORY TO THE POSTER.  Drag the items from your inventory that you want to sell and place them into “Contents.”

5. GIVE THE SAMPLE VENDOR POSTER A NAME. Right click on the Vendor Poster and look under the GENERAL tab.  Change the name to something that describes the product that you are selling.

6. SET THE PRICE FOR THE PRODUCT.  Stay in the GENERAL tab.  Look towards the bottom and you’ll see “For Sale”  Make sure that’s checked.  Then next to it, make sure “Contents” is selected.  Finally make sure “Show in Search” is checked.  (All these will be set on the Sample Poster, but it’s always good to double-check this.)  Finally, and most importantly, enter the price of the product in PRICE L$ field.

7. HANG THE POSTER & START SELLING. Okay that’s it.  You are ready to hang up your vendor poster and start selling items.

The following are directions for VENDOR POSTER #2

Select Vendor Poster II (see above for an explanation of the differences poster I and II).

4. REZ A BOX AND PLACE ITEMS TO BE SOLD IN BOX.  Now you want to make a box and place the item or items being sold in the box.  Haven’t done that before?  To rez a box, right click on the ground and select “Build.”  A little wand will appear.  Click on the ground and a box will appear.  Right click on the box and select the “Contents” tab.  Drag the items from your inventory that you want to sell and place them into “Contents.”

5. NAME THE BOX.  After you have the items you want to sell in the box, let’s give the box a name.  Select the “General” tab and assign a name to the box.  The assigned name will become the name of the folder that will end up in your customer’s inventory.

6. “TAKE” THE BOX INTO YOUR INVENTORY.  Right click on the box, and select “Take” to place the box in your inventory.

7. DRAG THE BOX FROM INVENTORY TO THE VENDOR POSTER.  Now drag the box out of your inventory and place it in “Contents” of the Sample Vendor Poster.

8. GIVE THE SAMPLE VENDOR POSTER A NAME. Right click on the Vendor Poster and look under the GENERAL tab.  Change the name to something that describes the product that you are selling.

9. MAKE SURE “FOR SALE” IS OFF.  Stay in the “GENERAL” tab.  Look “For Sale.”  Make sure it is NOT checked.  That seems funny but the script will be handling the selling part and turning this on adds a “BUY” button which you don’t need.  Make sure, however, that “Show in Search” is checked.

10. PREPARE A NOTECARD.  Prepare a notecard with pre-purchase information.  You want to tell the customer about the product, what they get and why they might buy it.  You can use pretty much the same text that you would use for selling the item on the Second Life Marketplace.  When you finish the notecard, save it and drag into the “Contents” of the Vendor Poster.

11. ENTER THE PRICE OF THE ITEM.  At this point, you enter the price in the script.  To open the script, click on the “Contents” tab of the Sample Vendor Poster.  Double click on the script to open it.  Look at text within the script and you’ll see a place to enter the price.  Enter the price.

12. HANG THE POSTER & START SELLING. All finished.  You are now ready to hang up your vendor poster and start selling items.
