Guide to Making SL Clothing

Guide to Making Second Life Clothing

Many of the clothing creation tutorials that you’ll find on the Internet are getting a little dated, and there are a number of new techniques that are helpful.  Before writing the following tutorials, I spent considerable time researching the topics to uncover the latest information.  (If I’ve missed something, let me know.)  Here’s a current list of tutorials.  I will be adding more:

.
  • Introduction & Getting Started With Second Life Clothing - Where to get UV Maps (the basic building block of SL clothing).  How to customize UV maps for your use.  What are the characteristics of high quality SL clothing.  Info on ready-to-wear UV maps for designing purposes and a free package that I have prepared for your use.
.
  • Applying Clothing to the Avatar – Once you make clothing in your graphics program, you need to upload it to Second Life.   Then you need to run through a short process which allows you (or anyone else) to wear the clothing.  This tells you how to do it.
.
  • Making Your First SL Clothing: Sleeveless Shirt – Step by step directions on how to make your first piece of clothing in Second Life.  I have prepared a free package of files for this tutorial, and you can download everything you need.
.
  • Creating the Main Outline and Using Work-up Photos.  If you are creating a clothing item from scratch, it’s very important to establish the main outline of the item before you do much else.  Everything in the creation process which follows is based on the outline.  This tells you how it’s done and how to use Work-up Photos to help you.  I have a free set of Work-up Photos that you can download.
.
  • Making Wrinkles and Folds in Second Life Clothing. In order for clothing to look natural in Second Life, you must have some folds or wrinkles in it.   Without some form of lighting and shadowing from folds or wrinkles, Second Life clothing just looks too painted-on, too artificial.  This demonstrates how to use the most commonly used technique.
.
  • How to Sell Your Creations. If you’ve created something that others might like to purchase, you’ll need a vendor poster.  You see them at stores throughout Second Life.  You click on them to purchase items.  This has information on how to obtain a free vendor poster kit and how to start selling your own items.
.
  • Annotated List of Other Clothing Tutorials and Resources. In the above tutorials, I’ve only covered a tiny portion of the topic of clothing creation in Second Life.  There’s much more, of course.  To provide some guidance, I’ve prepared an annotated list of other fine resources that are available.
.

Scripting Resources

Finally, I want to mention Second Life’s scripting language.  If you create things in Second Life, at some point, you’ll need to make use of scripts.   I have several free scripts available, and additionally, I’ve prepared an annotated of list of other scripting resources:
